Chesney ES, Community Help Teacher’s Family – Duluth Post

on November 10, 2011

Chesney Elementary School and the Duluth community are collecting monetary donations and gift cards for the family of Chesney kindergarten teacher Sandra Walker. She and her husband were injured in an auto accident in South Fulton at Flat Shoals Road and Harper Valley Drive about 12:13 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon.

A white van in which Walker, her husband Glen and their two children were traveling was struck by a black minivan, which reportedly had been speeding and driving erratically before crossing the median, striking the Walker van head on and causing it to flip, according to Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester. Glen Walker was driving the white van.

Joshua Jenkins, 16, a passenger in the black minivan was killed. Charges are pending against Tamara Matthews, 36, who was driving the black minivan, Lester said Wednesday. Matthews and two 12-year-old children riding in the black minivan remain hospitalized. A 3-year-old passenger in the black minivan has been released from the hospital and is staying with an aunt, Lester said.

Glen and Sandra Walker also are still hospitalized. Sandra Walker was in “good” condition, and Glen Walker was in “critical but improving condition,” Lester reported. Their two children Alana, 6, and Cameron, 2, were taken to Egleston after the accident and already have been released, Lester said. They are being cared for by family members.

Donations of money and gift cards, especially for grocery, food, gas, and stores that carry diapers, wipes and baby supplies, are being collected. Sandra Walker’s uncle Jim Meeker, who lives in Duluth, is coordinating donations from the community. He may be reached at

Dear Doug, Cindy, Tom and Sandy

John called me last night to let me know about the accident that Sandy, her husband and children were in. Small world – John and his wife, Megan, play kickball with the wife of Glen’s brother. They put two and two together and let me know.

Cindy and Doug – I can’t imagine how you felt. Being so far away – not being right there. I can imagine the rush around your home to drive to Atlanta. You all know that our heartfelt prayers and God’s healing hands go out to all of you. We go back a long ways – but you have always been “family” to me. I wish I was there to hug you but know that Bernie’s and my arms are around the whole family and continuously in our prayers.

    Love – Mary
